Furniture

I'm getting really disappointed. I'm really beginning to believe that I'm never going to find the living room furniture I want. :( Maybe it's yet another unexpected cultural hiccup, but ALL I can find is variations of this:

Sure, you can get it in 15 different shapes (curved back/arm-rests vs. square) and sizes (2 seats vs. 7 or chaise vs. couch.) Oh, and the fabric choices? Leather, leather, leather, micro-suede and more leather. It's not that I don't like this couch. I think it's very cool with the whole mid-century modern vibe goin on, but I was really hoping to go in more of a classic-contemporary direction like this:

This is my fave couch. If we were in America I would have bought it! When I said that I can only find the one type of couch it's honestly with minimal exaggeration. Most every couch has that mod vibe to it, even if it's not exactly like the one in that picture, and the ones that aren't mod have that La-Z-Boy look to them which is just way too casual for my taste. The most painful thing is that this couch is only $650 and it's EXACTLY what I want. My dream couch. Oh, p.s. it would also have been delivered and moved in FOR FREE. Incidentally, I might be paying twice what I would for Dream Couch on something I don't even like all that much just because we need a good sturdy couch and there's no other options. ::sigh::

Also, to add insult to injury, I can't find anything in the fabric I want.

(Incidentally Dream Couch is in this fabric in a lighter color!) This is a swatch a took off my parents couch! They've had their couch for almost 10 years now and I won't say it looks as fresh as the day they brought it home, but it definitely doesn't look a decade old. It doesn't look dated, stained, or dilapidated and I worry that something more modern just wouldn't hold up to the tests of time in quite the same way. We may have this couch for 20 some-odd years before buying another one, I really want to make sure we're getting our money's worth!

It's not the end of the world or anything...it's just frustrating for something I could find in most furniture stores back in DFW to be presumably non-existant. I'm beginning to feel I can't have *any* kind of expectations about *anything* since chances are good they'll be impossible to meet with the current resources. Booo. I'll just keep hoping someone in this country can point me towards my couch!

Trend Whore

I wouldn't call myself a trend-whore persay... I mean, I'm definitely not that girl obsessing over what the latest trend is so I can call myself fashionable. However, I must admit that I intend to take full advantage of the 80s pop-culture renaissance and wear as much lycra and viscose as humanly possible while I can get away with it!!

I should blame my recent weight gain for my current obsession with all things stretchy. After all, my 5% spandex shorts are SO comfortable (and I don't feel like I might inadvertently amputate something like some of my jeans feel at the moment.) So, jokingly, I posted on Facebook today if anyone thought I could get away with wearing bike-shorts all the time considering the resurgence of 80s and mid 90s fashion, mainly because I just bought some bike shorts to wear to the gym and they are SO COMFORTABLE I want to live in them. Then, I googled it....and whaddya know! I am SO on trend for 2010 in my black bike shorts. I should have known considering I didn't even have to go in the athletic-wear section to buy these shorts. Hey, you know what else I love? You'd pay at least $60 for a pair of denim shorts here in the land of Rob-Me-Blind, and I get to laugh all the way to the bank in my $15 pair of trendy bike shorts. I am wearing them with a grey viscose off-the-shoulder tunic tee thing and it feels like I'm in my pjs. This is insane. I cannot believe this is fashion today...

FOREVER21:

Okay, okay, so I don't have pins like these runway models....but I think I can get away with this so long as I keep my booty covered. Like tights for the summer...maybe. Don't judge. :P

Worst Blogger Evarr

I know, I've been absent lately. I don't have a good excuse why, sorry!

I just wanted to pop in and give the heads up that my Partner Visa has been approved. Wooo!!

It never ceases to amaze people that you can't just marry an Australian and automatically become a citizen. Maybe they were confused by tv shows where someone has to marry the token Foreign Friend so they can remain in the country....I guess it does make it seem like all you have to do is marry someone and you're good to go! Not so....lucky for us our case must have been fairly open-and-shut since we didn't have to go through any interviews or anything. We also didn't have to hire an immigration lawyer. YAY! So, I am finally allowed to work and study without restrictions. :) One hiccup is that, while I was researching, I found that I might have to be an Australian resident to do an apprenticeship/traineeship. Some sites have said that you can apply if you have a visa with work allowances though...so I'm just going to have to take to the employers. Otherwise I'll be stuck doing some kind of retail/food-service job (which is easier said than done in this place considering 99% of the shops here--all 10 of them--are family businesses and even the franchises don't employ more than a couple people at a time...)

One of the things I love about my Faith is that I have the security of knowing God is in control at all times. I don't have to worry about what I'm going to do or if something I want to happen doesn't work out because I know I'm never anywhere except exactly where God intends me to be; if that's unemployed at home taking uni. courses online then so be it. I can't help but hope that things work out with me in a job though, I'm getting pretty freakin bored over here! I get nervous sometimes wondering what all these tests in patience are preparing me for! lol
